Berkey Water Filter systems are great, but they are not for everybody. Another great option is Acuva Water Purification Systems. Take a look at some of the pros and cons, the good and bad, of the Berkey system. We’ve been using it for over a year while traveling full-time in an RV and we’ve learned a lot.

One thing is for sure though, having clean water is very important. There are numerous ways to filter or purify your water. Make sure to test your water supply to know if you need additional filtration. And if you spend a lot of time traveling like we do, do yourself a favor and assume you should always be filtering your water.

Would we have purchased the Berkey if we knew then what we know now? That’s just one of many things we discuss in this video.

Get an idea of what contaminants are in your water to know what type of filtration you need.

Important questions:
Is your water fluoridated? If so, you’ll need a filter that removes this toxin.
Do you live in an area with lots of agriculture activity? This could lead to significant contamination with herbicide/pesticides.

EWG states ceramic filters cannot remove chemical contaminants, though the lab results (if genuine) posted on the sites selling ceramic filters states otherwise.

Also, as you’re shopping, keep in mind there’s a difference between water purification (removes bacteria, viruses, cysts, parasites, etc to make it safe to drink) and filtration (theoretically removes chemicals, heavy metals, and other particulate contamination to make it “clean”).
