Do I Need A Refrigerator Filter?

Drinking clean water is vital to your health and having a refrigerator water filter can be an easy and inexpensive way to get clean water all the time. There are actually two types of filters to discuss here – the type that is built in to the refrigerator and the pitcher that simply sits in the fridge.

What Is A Refrigerator Water Filter?

A water filter that is built in to your refrigerator is probably the easiest type of filtration you can get. Of course, you have to buy one of the newer model refrigerators to get it, but once you have you’ll see how easy it is. For this to work, you have a water line that is hooked directly to the refrigerator. The water comes from your water supply, into the back of the fridge, through filtration, and out the front of the fridge into your glass.

This filter removes metals, chemicals and other contaminants that are present in your tap water, making the water more palatable as well as healthy for you to drink. Most will also filter the ice maker as well, ensuring that even this water source is pure.

Another type of refrigerator water filter is simply a pitcher that has a filter inside it. Pour water into the top of the pitcher, and it drips down through the filter, producing clean water in the bottom that you can pour out and drink. This is a more economical solution for those of us who can’t afford a new refrigerator.

The filtration on either of these is probably carbon because this substance can absorb many different impurities and chemicals. While these are great for getting rid of stuff that makes the water taste bad, the carbon filter is not adequate for ridding your water of some toxic chemicals and, if you are really serious about healthy water, you may want to consider another solution.

On the other hand, if you just want water that tastes good, then these types of filters will work fine. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the more use the filter gets, the less effective it will be. As the contaminants are being filtered out of the water, they are getting trapped in the filter, thus clogging it up and leaving less area for fresh filtering.

As with anything else, there are new advances in the technology of refrigerator water filters, and you can look for newer materials and solid carbon block filters that filter out more of the dangerous contaminants.
