Berkey water filters such as the Big Berkey have become the standard in free-standing, home water filtration systems. But with a price tag of $300, I wanted something that was a lot less expensive. So using (BPA-free, food-grade) buckets and the same type of filter elements that the Berkey systems use, I was able to build my own high-capacity water filtering system for 75% less than the Big Berkey costs.

About Water Filter
A water filter removes impurities by lowering contamination of water using a fine physical barrier, a chemical process, or a biological process. Filters cleanse water to different extents for purposes such as providing agricultural irrigation, accessible drinking water, public and private aquaria, and the safe use of ponds and swimming pools.
About Rainbird 1 Large Capacity Disc Filter-130 Micron/120 Mesh-NPT Thread
Rain Bird disc filter is a type of irrigation filter, similar to a screen filter, except that the filter cartridge is made up of a number of disks stacked on top of each other like a pile of poker chips.
The filtration element consists of grooved discs, mounted on a spine, forming a cylindrical filter element. The water passes through the small grooves in between the discs which are compressed together by a spring located at the bottom of the filter cover and the impurities are trapped behind. Disc filters can be back flushed in such a way that the disks are able to separate and spin during the cleaning cycle.

Instructions
Cut off the bottom of an old plastic soda or juice bottle using scissors or a knife.
Place the bottle upside down into the vase or tall drinking glass.
Place cotton balls, cloth, or a coffee filter inside the bottle as the first layer. The first layer should be about one to two inches thick.
Add an inch of activated charcoal as the second layer on top of the cotton layer.
Over the charcoal, add about two inches of gravel or small stones as the third layer.
Add about three to four inches of clean sand on top of the gravel.
Add gravel to the bottle as the final layer. Leave about a half inch of space from the top of the upside down bottle.
Now take a nice big glass of water and dirty it up. Mix a good amount of dirt into it and turn it into mud. My daughter loved this part. Pour your muddy water into the top of your water filter and watch it slowly saturate the layers and make its way through your filter into the glass beneath

In this video I will show how to build a water filter using an empty 2 Liter bottle and materials that you can source from the wild. This will work with any container, whether it be a bottle, hollow wood or whatever will hold water. The More you cycle through the filter the cleaner the water will be.
