Part of Carter Lake under boil water advisory after water main break

A water main break has led to a boil water advisory in a part of Carter Lake, Iowa.The incident happened around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.Homes located on the north side of Locust Street have been affected.The repair could take several hours and it is recommend to avoid drinking the water without boiling it first.The following steps should be taken:Bring all water to a boilLet it boil for one minuteLet it cool before usingAlternatively, bottle water can be used.Officials said either boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice.Water has been restored, however the boil water advisory is still in effect and officials said there may be air in the water piping and the water may be discolored.Officials recommended to run the water from a faucet such as a bathtub or hose bib to allow for the air to escape and to run the water until it is clear.Carter Lake residents can register for emergency alerts at https://pcema-ia.org/.
