WATERFORD — Wolf Creek Local Schools Board of Education held a special meeting Wednesday to nominate and vote on a candidate for the open board seat position, and to discuss a resolution to renew the emergency tax levy.

Roger Doak, who had served on the board for 12 years said he decided not to run for re-election in the 2021 general election in November.

“So, I just wanted to give someone else an opportunity to run, get some of these young people with a lot of expertise in here,” Doak said, at a board meeting in December. “It’s just been a pleasure to serve with the board for the last 12 years and it’s just such a great school district.”

Doak’s term was up at the end of December 2021. The seat on the board is open because no one filed to run for the position in November’s election.

The board nominated and voted on Matt Hansell to serve on the board for a two-year term. Hansell will be sworn in at the next board meeting and will also be appointed as the legislative liaison for the 2022 year.

In the organizational meeting on Jan. 10, a resolution was introduced for the renewal of the five-year emergency tax levy. The levy has been renewed twice since it originally passed in 2007. The levy generates $781,927 for each year that it is in effect.

Superintendent Doug Baldwin said the levy helps keep the district in operation by paying for emergency requirements. He said the levy has previously helped purchase roofing, windows, and the HVAC system for the elementary school.

The board voted and passed the resolution during the special meeting. The levy renewal will appear on the ballot of the primary election to be held on May 3.

The board voted to accept $171,080 from the Emergency Connectivity Fund for the purchasing of new Chromebooks. The ECF is a program from the Federal Communications Commission that reimburses schools and libraries for costs of eligible equipment and broadband connections.

“It’s gonna help us out and keep our technology modern,” said Baldwin.
