What is Radiation in Water?

Radiation in physics is the energy transmitted or emitted through space or material medium and travels in the form of particles or waves. non-ionizing radiation and ionizing radiation are the two types of radiation, which include light, radio, cell phones, radon, x-rays, gamma rays, infrared radiation, and microwaves. Radiation can either be man-made or naturally occurring. Radiological contamination of water is caused by radionuclides, which emits energy in the forms of rays or high-speed particles.

What Are Its Effects?

There are different types of radiation sources, either naturally occurring or artificial. Background radiation is the more common of these radiation sources. It is all around us, and our health is at risk at all times. The other sources of radiation exposure are through cell phones, x-rays, microwaves, light, and radio waves.

Long-term exposure to radiation by consuming contaminated drinking water may result in cancers of the skin, lungs, bone, kidneys, liver, stomach, thyroid glands, and other parts of human tissues. The severity of the damage caused by the exposure may depend on several factors, including the type of radiation, the amount of radiation, and the area of concentration in the human body.

Can You Drink Radioactive Water?

Radioactive water is not safe for consumption due to the increased risk of getting cancer. Until the results confirm it’s safe to drink the water, it’s highly recommended to drink from bottled water or a regulated water source.

How Do You Remove Radiation from Drinking Water?

The recommended treatment method for removing most kinds of radiation from drinking water is through Reverse Osmosis. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, RO removes radioactive isotopes that are mostly present or found in municipal water systems. Activated carbon also helps in eliminating radiation particles like iodine-131 by absorbing and fixing contaminants in the water. Lastly, ion exchange is another technique recommended by the EPA to remove radiation particles from drinking water. Boiling the water will not remove any types of radiation particles from the drinking water. Today, most water filtration systems are designed and built to filter contaminants like radiation from drinking water.

What is Radioactive Water?

When radioactive substances enter water supplies, radionuclides contaminate the water and make it unsuitable for drinking and use. Humans and any other living organism exposed to radiation in water may experience various health issues.
