Chlorobenzene

Chlorobenzene is a colorless to clear yellowish, aromatic, flammable substance with an almond-like odor. The human-made substance with chemical formula C₆H₅CI is practically insoluble in water, denser than water, and vapors heavier than air. It is the simplest member of the class of monochlorobenzenes.

The major production of the substance is for its importance as an intermediate in the manufacturing of other products, including rubber, herbicide, and dyestuffs. It also has a role as a solvent for pesticide formulations and as an automobile degreaser.

Should it enter water systems, the EPA’s MCL for chlorobenzene in drinking water is 0.1 ppm or parts per million. The Environment Protection Agency’s regulated standards for drinking water prevents the health issues associated with chlorobenzene in drinking water.

Individuals exposed to chlorobenzene in drinking water for a short period of time may experience impaired kidney and liver function. Liver, kidney, and central nervous damages are among the health issues associated with long-term exposure to chlorobenzene above the MCL in drinking water.

According to the recommendation of the Environmental Protection Agency, the most effective way to remove chlorobenzene to below the regulated standard in drinking water is by using granular activated carbon (GAC) and packed tower aeration.
