The town of Waynesville had a discharge of treated wastewater on the premises of the wastewater treatment facility due to excessive flows on the intake lines.
The sanitary sewer overflow began at midnight Wednesday, March 25, during periods of intense precipitation and ended at approximately 11:00 a.m. the same day.
The total spill amount is estimated at 44,000 gallons. The discharges ended when the water levels subsided. The flows in the plant were above 9.0 MGD during this time.
All spill areas have been contained and any adversely affected areas cleaned as necessary. No boil water advisory was or is required as the discharge did not impact any water lines and no flow is known to have impacted any natural water sources.
During this time, precipitation was measured at 2.89 inches. Maintenance activities and sewer system rehabilitation are continually being performed to identify and correct infiltration and inflow sources connected to the sewer system to prevent overflows in the event of future severe natural conditions.
