Water system operators for the town of Wise, Virginia say it could be three to five days until customers will be able to stop boiling their water before usage.

A report issued by the authority said a water line break on Wampler Avenue Southwest was the cause of the notice being issued on Monday.

A large swath of households is affected by the break and boil notice including portions of US Route 23, Roberts Avenue, West Main Street, Skye Avenue, and Lake Street Northwest.

Video: Coastal Barriers Removed In South Haven

[ad_1]

The barriers protecting infrastructure in South Haven from high water in Lake Michigan have been removed. City Manager Kate Hosier tells WSJM News crews took out the sand-filled, cube structures starting last week.

“They were put there in 2020 due to the rising waters,” Hosier said. “We have critical infrastructure that’s under the beach. We have a million gallon holding tank for fresh water that must be held there for 24 hours before it can be sent out to our water distribution system, and should the high waters have reached that tank, we could have put over 11,000 customers on a permanent boil water notice indefinitely.”

Hosier says the Lake Michigan water level is now low enough that the infrastructure isn’t threatened. She says beach goers may enjoy a barrier free view, although those barriers had to be put there and could be redeployed if the lake level gets threateningly high again. The barriers at South Beach were removed Monday morning, while barriers near the wastewater treatment plant were taken out last week.

Warm Springs Indian Reservation issued an emergency water conservation notice issued after an underground fire.

WARM SPRINGS, Ore. — Officials with the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in north central Oregon have issued an emergency water conservation notice after an underground fire shut the tribes’ water treatment plant.

The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs asked residents starting Friday to limit water use to essential needs only.

Agency Water System Users are under an Emergency Water Conservation Notice. Please limit water use to essential needs…

Posted by Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Oregon on Friday, March 18, 2022

In a Facebook post, officials said the notice affects users in the Agency Area, Upper Dry Creek, Sunnyside, Wolfe Point and Kah-Nee-Ta Hamlets

Tribal Emergency Manager Dan Martinez said an underground electrical fire “caused a complete shutdown of the water plant.”

“It’s totally down, out of operation,” Martinez said Saturday, while busy with other tribal officials bringing in showers and toilets. It’s the latest chapter in years of issues with the reservation’s aging water system, which has included outages, broken pipes and contamination that prompted several lengthy boil-water notices.

The large federal infrastructure bill passed late last year includes money to address serious water issues on the nation’s reservations, but such projects can take months to plan — and years to complete.

Martinez said the water treatment plant could be shuttered from a week to two months and that the reservation is seeking water donations.

Staying above water: St. Charles residents grill FEMA on insurance rate increases

[ad_1]

“These flood insurance rates. That we’re seeing are unreasonable and are gonna kill our community,” Jewell said to the crowd of about 100 residents.

ST CHARLES, La. — FEMA was put on the spot Thursday night, answering to a gym full of anxious St. Charles Parish residents and Parish President Matthew Jewell.

Even after investing millions into flood mitigation measures, St. Charles Parish residents will soon be stuck with surging flood insurance bills.

The new, sky-high rates are brought upon by FEMA’s new flood rating system – Risk Rating 2.0.

“These flood insurance rates. That we’re seeing are unreasonable and are gonna kill our community,” Jewell said to the crowd of about 100 residents.

Lifelong residents like Robert Dupont, who lives in Bayou Gauche, are worried FEMA will price them out of their own homes.

“I’ve been there 30 years and we never had no flood,” said Dupont. “A little bit of rain back in whatever year that was, 94, but they fixed that. And the levees always held up through all the hurricanes we had.”

Dupont’s insurance premium will be between four and six thousand dollars at its maximum. It’s increasing 18 percent this year alone, as many are.

“There’s a lot of people who are leaving because of the prices. They’re pricing us out of our homes.  Sometimes I think That’s what they want. They want us to all leave this area,” said Dupont.

Under Risk Rating 2.0, the risk is set building by building, instead of by flood zone or elevation.

FEMA Insurance Liaison Gilbert Giron, Jr., was on hand to answer questions submitted by the crowd.

“Under risk rating 2.0, we’re going off of a unique risk characteristic for that building,” said Giron.

But the flood insurance costs will spike across the parish. Rates are capped at an 18 percent incremental increase every year until residents hit their maximum premium. However, anyone who allows their policy to lapse, or people who purchase new flood insurance policies, will have to buy in at the new, maximum rate.

“Right now, your flood insurance rates can go up 18 percent. And on April 1st, a lot of people in St. Charles are probably gonna see that 18 percent increase. But when does it stop?” said Jewell.

Some of St. Charles Parish has struggled with flooding through the years but stayed relatively dry during Hurricane Ida thanks to huge investments in flood protection.

But to this audience eager for answers, and Congressman Garrett Graves who will take these complaints to Washington, it can feel like FEMA is moving the goalposts.

And for residents like Dupont, it makes it harder to stay above water.
