Update 3: The Boil Water Alert recently issued for all city water customers in the Forest Oaks area is no longer in effect. Sampling and bacteriological testing confirm that the water is safe for all uses. The water main break was identified by the failure of an elbow on a 16″ water main located off Twining Road, and site conditions made it difficult to access and repair.

All City customers affected must now thoroughly flush their water lines to bring fresh water into their building’s system.

Flushing a water system:

· Run all indoor cold water faucets simultaneously for at least three minutes before using the water.

· Flush garden hoses with cold water for three minutes as well.

· Flush home automatic icemakers by making three batches of ice and discarding all three batches.

· If the hot water heater is set at a temperature below 120˚ F (“normal” range is 140-160˚F), empty the building’s hot water heater by draining it or by running all hot water faucets simultaneously for at least 15 minutes.

· Replace all types of water filters that were used on or after December 14 or clean and disinfect devices according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Update 2: The Boil Water Alert is still in effect and will remain in effect through Thursday evening, December 17. Unfortunately the line failed early Wednesday morning, December 16, close to the original break. Water Resources staff isolated the break believes all customers should have restored water service. The City plans to begin a more holistic repair of the line when weather and site conditions improve.

Any customers still experiencing a water outage, should call the City Contact Center at 336-373-CITY.

Water Resources apologizes for the inconvenience this causes customers and appreciates their patience.

Update 1: The Boil Water Alert is still in effect and will remain in effect through tomorrow evening, Wednesday, December 16. This will be based on bacteriological samples gathered. The system is being flushed and samples gathered to confirm disinfectant levels are stable. Repairs to the 16″ water main break at Twining Road are in progress and immediate repairs should be complete tonight, Tuesday, December 15.

Effective immediately, the City of Greensboro Water Resources Department has issued a boil water notice to all customers in the Forest Oaks area. This area is experiencing periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system due to an unidentified line break since approximately 6 pm, Monday, December 14. Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system.

Until further notice, Greensboro water customers in the Forest Oaks area should use bottled water or bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute before drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, cleaning dishes, preparing infant formula and juices, washing fruits, vegetables, and foods. Ice or any beverages prepared with un-boiled tap water on or after December 14 should be discarded. Tap water is okay for showers and baths, but keep out of eyes, nose and mouth.
